Competing with Spain , the first English colony in the Americas was founded in 1585 by explorer Walter Raleigh in Virginia and named Roanoke . The Roanoke colony failed and is known as the lost colony, after it was found abandoned on the return of the late-arriving supply ship. With the East India Company , England also competed with the Dutch and French in the East. In 1588, during the Elizabethan period , an English fleet under Francis Drake was going to face Spanish Armada which failed because of the storms. The political structure of the island changed in 1603, when the King of Scots , James VI , a kingdom which was a longtime rival to English interests, inherited the throne of England as James I — creating a personal union . He styled himself King of Great Britain , although this had no basis in English law. Under the auspices of King James VI and I the Authorised King James Version of the Holy Bible was published in 1611. It has not only been ranked with Shakespeare 's works as the greatest masterpiece of literature in the English language but also was the standard version of the Bible read by most Protestant Christians for four hundred years, until modern revisions were produced in the 20th century.
"We played some good rugby in that first half but it's hard to play well if you don't have the ball. We will come again in four years' time. Fair play to New Zealand, they executed their plan better than we did ours."
we have three teaching periods or trimesters — commencing in February, July and October — providing students greater choice about when and how much you study each year. In most cases, this is an opportunity to complete a degree sooner. Or, you can take a lighter study load to manage work and other commitments.
We monitor, inspect and regulate services to make sure they meet fundamental standards of quality and safety and we publish what we find, including performance ratings to help people choose care.
I hope that this website will help to answer some of the questions you may have about The Warwick School. The choice of a secondary school is a momentous one, however, and mere words and pictures can only scratch the surface in conveying the full depth and richness of life at The Warwick. I, the staff and our students would be delighted to show you more of what we offer and I should be delighted to meet you on Open Evening or on one of our school tours at which you can see the school at work.
